Mix & match with the new shawl pattern Thames

January 3, 2020
By Janina Kallio

Thames shawl pattern from Woolenberry.

I’m so excited to kick off 2020 with my new shawl pattern Thames!

This shawl was such a pleasure to design and knit. I hope you’ll love knitting it too!

Thames is an asymmetric triangle shawl. The textured body has vertical twisted stitch columns on reverse stockinette stitch. They create vertical stripes and add texture and rhythm. On the reverse side, you’ll have neat stockinette stitch with vertical lines of twisted purl stitches.

The delicate and crisp lace border adds an airiness to the shawl. You work the lace on garter stitch, so it has no purl stitches and looks good on both sides.

You’ll need about 664 m / 726 yds of fingering weight yarn for Thames. I knitted mine with two skeins of Malabrigo Yarn Sock (100% merino; 402 m / 440 yds per 100 g) in colour Polar Morn.

Thames is an independent add-on pattern to the Mix & Match – Rivers collection

You don’t need to have the collection to knit Thames, but if you do, you have loads of options to create your own shawl adventure.

You can knit Thames on its own. But if you also have the Mix & Match – Rivers collection, you can combine the different body and border sections to create your own masterpiece.

Together with Thames and the 3 patterns in the Mix & Match – Rivers collection, you can create 16 different shawl!
The Mix & Match – Rivers collection includes 3 patterns (Elbe, Seine & Tiber). Thames is not included in the collection.

Wondering how to mix & match?

Thames, as well as all 3 patterns in the Mix & Match – Rivers collection, have two sections, a textured body and a lace border, and they are interchangeable. You can knit the textured body from any of the four patterns and match it to any of the lace borders.

For example, you could knit the textured body section from Thames, and continue with the lace border from Elbe, Seine or Tiber. Or you could knit the textured body from Elbe, Seine or Tiber, and continue with the lace border from Thames.

All the math is done for you, so all you need to do is choose your combo of body and border, and simply follow the instructions. What will you make?
