Shawl Club 2019 coming soon!

February 4, 2019 By Janina Kallio

Waiting for Spring from Woolenberry

Do you like surprises?

The super popular Woolenberry shawl club is back for another year!

The 2019 Woolenberry Shawl Club includes 4 beautiful shawls inspired by the changing seasons. All these patterns are exclusive to the Shawl Club until 2020. So if you love Woolenberry shawls and surprises, you’ll want to join! The club opens on February 14th.

The first club pattern is called Waiting for Spring. I’ve asked a bunch of lovely knitters to test knit the shawl before the release. And in two weeks, you can have it on your needles, too. So stay tuned, I’ll tell you more soon! While you’re waiting, here’s a quick look at last year’s club shawls.

Melodia revisited

January 28, 2019 By Janina Kallio

Yarn Love: Atelier Zitron Seidenstrasse.

Whenever I have the time, I like to visit my old patterns and envision them in different yarns and colours. This skein of Seidenstrasse from Atelier Zitron had been sitting in my stash for years before I realised it would be perfect for Melodia.

Melodia is one of my most popular patterns to date. Hundreds of knitters around the world have fallen in love with its simplicity and understated beauty, and many have knitted it more than once. (Including me! This is my third one.) With well over 600 Melodia shawls on Ravelry, you’re sure to find plenty of yarn and colour inspiration.

Melodia is a one skein wonder, so it knits up quickly. It also means that the shawl isn’t too bulky and you can wear it wrapped around your neck as a scarf, which is how I like to wear my shawls.

Melodia is knitted from the top down, starting from the neck. Rhythmic eyelet sequences and horizontal garter stitch lines give it a balanced look with a modern feel. This shawl is a relaxing knit with plenty of garter stitch. Perfect for knit nights and travelling. Or a knitflix binge. (Anyone else desperately waiting for new seasons of Veep, The Good Fight and Big Little Lies?!)

As you might have noticed, I’m in the process of updating my older patterns. I’ve been publishing patterns for over five years and learned a lot along the way. The pattern support emails I receive usually focus on the same questions about blocking, size of the shawl, stitch counts, or how many repeats to make and what to repeat. These are the questions I’m trying answer in the updated patterns (among other things), so you won’t have to put your knitting on pause while you figure it out.

Last week I updated Summer Sky, and this week’s updates include Alchemy and Melodia. (Read more about Alchemy here.)

If you’ve already purchased Melodia on Ravelry, you have received an email with a link to download the updated pattern. You can also access the new file from your Ravelry library.

If you don’t have Melodia yet, show your pattern library some love by purchasing it on Ravelry. Happy knitting!

A winter favourite: Alchemy shawl

January 24, 2019 By Janina Kallio

Alchemy shawl pattern from Woolenberry

It’s quite the winter wonderland here in Helsinki at the moment. Everything is covered in snow and the weather is crisp and cold. I’m wearing wool on wool and have taken out all my winter shawls to keep me cosy and warm.

One of my favourite winter shawls is Alchemy. It’s designed for DK weight yarn, and I used Frida Fuchs Wonneproppen DK for mine. I’ve also seen beautiful versions knit up in Sweet Georgia, Miss Babs, Sandnes Garn, De Rerum Natura and Dye For Yarn, and many more.

This cosy wrap explores the open star stitch using two colours. I’ve used this stitch pattern in other shawls too (like Summer Sky), as it’s one of my favourites, but here the use of two colours give it a very different, almost three-dimensional look. It seems like colourwork, but you only use one colour at a time, so it’s easy and fun to make.

I also updated the pattern to a new, beautiful layout. I’ve included a helpful stitch count table, suggested bind off and modification notes, among other lovely treats. You can get the Alchemy pattern on Ravelry.

If you’ve already purchased Alchemy (or Wanderlust Knits collection), you have received an email with a link to download the new pattern. You can also access the new file from your Ravelry library. Happy knitting!
