Arctic Willow beanie pattern from Woolenberry

Both practical and stylish, Arctic Willow hat is a wardrobe essential. The modern shape and beautiful cable stitch pattern make it a winter accessory must-have. It uses only a small amount of yarn, and it’s the perfect quick knit or a first foray beyond shawl knitting. The cable detail will keep you engaged throughout and you’ll be done before you know it.

Arctic Willow comes in three sizes, so you can knit it for yourself and for your friends and family. It is intended to be worn with negative ease, so measure your head circumference and choose a size that is  5-10 cm / 2-4 inches smaller.

Hats have a relatively small circumference. You can knit them using a 40 cm / 16 inch cable needle and switch to double pointed needles for the crown decreases. Or you can do the whole hat on dpns. You can also use other methods of knitting smaller circumferences in the round, like magic loop.

For Arctic Willow, you need a cable needle or a spare dpn to help you do the cable twists. You slip the stitch on the needle purlwise and hold it either to the back of your work or the front, depending on whether the cable twists to the right or to the left.

This hat is such a quick and fun project you can knit it from start to finish in one weekend. Perfect for gift knitting!
